How to celebrate Yule/Solstice?
My family is non-religious, but we still celebrate Christmas the way we did as children. It's a lot of fun, but I feel like a more nature-based celebration of gratitude and family would fit better with our lifestyle. I'm just not sure how to celebrate. Solstice seems so intertwined with established religions and history, that I'm just not sure where to begin.

Study the history of Solstice celebrations and see which ancient traditions seem most appealing.

Saturnalia sounds interesting, but I reckon it depends on whether you have kids and how old they are.
Or you could just do Thanksgiving over. The general idea is, "It may be cold and miserable outside and we may be down to the last vegetables in our root cellar, but we're still here and we have everything we really need (like each other) and boy, do we know how to party!"
