Should I teach my kids to read a road map?

Maps are seemingly outdated with almost everyone having a smart phone with GPS capabilities and even newer cars coming with built in GPS. Is there any point in teaching them how to use a road map? If technology is only getting better and more accessible will it just become a skill of the past?

  1. Absolutely! This is a great way to engage kids on road trips. It can also be a lifesaver if no service is available (most forget this part). Electronic maps only allow for very small images of your route. A paper map can be spread out to view all roads and bypasses you may want to explore.

Have your family plan a small road trip. Have the children highlight the route. Use other highlighters for "extra roads". This can look like, 10 extra miles to the largest tree in the State. Have the children check their map to match their route as you go.

When you want to do it again, have the kids plan the entire next trip. It will make them feel accomplished and proud. You also are making great memories!
