What kind of name is Bumpass? One that will provide your child with endless opportunities to learn how to deal with bullies and stupid people.
Personally, I'd change it before passing it down any further.
One website specializing in researching the origins of family names has this to say about the moniker:
"The origins of the Anglo-Saxon name Bumpass come from its first bearer, who was a swift walker. Originally the name Bumpass was from the Old French expression bon pas. The surname was first found in England soon after the Norman Conquest of 1066" (1)
I know- I am a bit nonplussed myself.
Another has this to say: It is the 344,303rd most common surname, and that approximately 1,063 people walk under its weight. (2)
Then there's Bumpass, Virgina, which is so-called for a Postmaster of the same name. Apparently the town is sticking with the French-connection as the least embarassing explanation. (3)
