If I am by myself on a trail, should I still wear a mask?
I live where there is a rail trail and there are spots that are not crowded at all. I can walk miles before passing a cyclist or see another walker.

No, you do not need to wear a mask when you are already socially distanced.
Masks protect the other guy from you- not the other way 'round. If it makes you feel better, you could wear your mask around your neck in case you cross paths with someone, and then put it into place when you get within a few-six feet of another person or group, and then take it down again when you are once again distanced.
Turns out masks help, but the smartest tactic to avoid CoVID-19 is to avoid being within three or four yards of any other people.
