    I think "oldies" is practically defined as "what your parents listened to when they were in high school". :-) So, for people whose parents are in their 40s or 50s, yeah, it's "what Dad listens to when he's mowing the lawn". But I'm 48, so I don't think they are.

    Nirvana is still an influence for a lot of modern music (well, modern alternative, not modern pop). Dave Grohl continues to make similar music with Foo Fighters, and their inflence is still heard throughout the 21st century (The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and many others). Nothing ever really goes away -- most songs are still intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-outro, after all. There's far more borrowed than new.
