Almost anything will grow well in a pot, until you forget to feed or water it or its root system outgrows the pot. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole so the roots don't get waterlogged and rot. Pots are great for plants you might want to move; but plants that get big (like most palms) require bigger and bigger pots, which you eventually might not be able to move.
Most orchids are usually grown in pots or on slabs of tree fern bark with sphagnum moss.
Kitchen herbs like basil make attractive potted plants and are convenient to predate upon.
And of course all sorts of flowers thrive in pots if you take care of them.
Pay attention to the sunlight requirements of any plant you choose, and make sure you can provide enough (but not too much).
