How to go about getting my car legal

My dad bought me a car in july 2019 from a man in pennsylvania. after 1309 it passed inspection here in md. i insured, tag, title, registration, etc..  after a little over a month it broke down and took me a couple days to get it towed. my tags were gone so i reported that online  The car just sat and recently got it fixed.  How do I go sbout getting it legally back on the road? Ive never been in a situation like this and am unsure where to begin.

Hey Regina, that's a tough spot. If the tags are "gone" as in someone took them, you definitely ought to call up your Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent and ask them what to do. In fact, you'll probably find an answer on their website. But, be aware, that if someone took the plates and commits a crime with them, you might find yourself explaining that to the police, so you want to let the State or Province know asap that your tags were stolen. You didn't do anything wrong, but you would normally have to turn in the plates when you get new ones, so being honest and letting them know what happened and what you need is the best course.

I looked up the issue generally on Google and can see that New York requires you to get a police report staing that the plates were stolen. https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/lost-or-stolen whereas New Jersey asks you to fill out a form at Motor Vehicles to state the same thing. https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/vehicles/aboutplates.htm

So definitely look it up for your area and follow the recommendations. Good luck!
