What is the best LEGO storage system?

My kids have an insane amount of LEGO. Really, it's out of hand. We have Rubbermaid totes and those do a great job of keeping them off the floor (mostly) but then all the little pieces sink to the bottom and the kids don't play with all of their pieces. What are some other storage methods that allow the kids to see more of their pieces but don't take up a ton of space?

I struggled with this for the longest time! We tried bins and buckets and had the same problem you are having--little pieces sink to the bottom and can't be found. Now we use hanging shoe organizers! They can be close pinned shut and then the whole arrangement can be rolled up, hung, pushed under the bed, whatever! It seems kooky, but it works really well for my kids.

The clear plastic allows them to see all the pieces in each pouch and because it's basically sheet plastic it doesn't take up a lot of space.

    here is an example
