Travel locales in Eastern California

I want to identify some good locales to visit east of the Bay area and Sacramento, maybe even north of those areas to see beautiful wilderness.  Can you make suggestions.

If you're going in the winter, try Squaw Valley and Sugarbowl for skiing, Lake Tahoe for boating/fishing and Reno for night life.  If you get over to the east side of the Sierras, check out Mono Lake.

In the spring and summer, Yosemite Valley is a scenic tourist trap; the high country of the Sierras (e.g. Ten Lakes or Dana Meadows suoth to Devil's Postpile) are great for backpacking, but if you want to avoid crowds of campers you might want to go south to Kings Canyon and Evolution Valley or north to Lassen.  The latter is also a good place to find hot springs and volcanism.  Follow the rules of safe camping and leave it at least as pristine as you found it!
