Home Printers

I am retired but I do need a printer now and then  since I use them so infrequently, the ink is dry or they don't work.
is there a solution to that. I don't need a colored printer.

  1. Inkjet printers are notorious ripoffs.  There have been examples reported of companies giving away the printers for free, knowing that they will make more money off the exorbitantly priced ink cartridges than from the printers themselves.

Laser printers tend to be pricey, but they are pretty durable, and one cartridge will print more pages than you are likely to need in a year.

If you don't care about print quality, you could get an old dot-matrix printer for next to nothing.  Maybe even for free!

  2. Barbara,

It really depends on how much you're willing to spend for a printer. As Jess points out, Laser is definitely the way to go for infrequent printing. These will tend to be more expensive in the short term, but last much longer and require much less maintenance (and cost) in the long run.

Here is a good review from PC Magazine on best laser printers of 2021.

If you want advice, I'd recommend Brother always. They've been around a long time and have a great name when it comes to quality products. Here is a good and inexpensive option. This one is $120 and only prints black and white.

If you can stand a budget of $300, you'll be in even better shape:
