Crate Training a Puppy?

My family and I just got a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy. He is our first dog and we're not sure how best to train him. I have two small children and the whining I hear about from crate training might be too hard on the kids. Also, will he be aggressive later in life because of crate training?

I suggest you give it a try and see what happens.  Be sure to drape a blanket over the crate to keep the light out -- but don't make it airtight, obviously.

We have a standard poodle and a mini; the mini has slept in his crate for 12 years and will not willingly sleep anywhere else -- he insists on being put to bed and "tucked in" (as it were) every night.  The standard is younger, and for the first few years he slept happily enough in his crate, but then we left him in the care of house-sitters and when we came back he would not go near his crate!  We still don't know why, but we don't bother trying to get him into it any more.  All things considered, it's better if they accept a crate, but okay if they don't.
