What are some practical ways to reduce my family's carbon footprint?

My wife and I have two young children and do all of the basics like recycling, using reusable containers, etc. But I'd love some advice and tips on how to take it to the next level. Sometimes things cross the line of burdensome, but I'd like to tip just over that line without diving head first into it. :)

    1. Get solar panels for your house if possible. I know that they're expensive to install at first, and might not even be cheaper for your utility bill, but it's environmentally efficient. And if electricity prices hyperinflate you'll be thanking your lucky stars you got 'em.
    2. Drive as little as possible. The structure of capitalist 9-to-5 life makes this hard, but if you can walk somewhere, do it. If you can carpool, do it. When your kids get old enough to walk to school alone, I'd also encourage that if your neighborhood is safe.
    3. Unplug all appliances and power outlets you're not using. To take things an extra step further, reduce reliance on electronics (e.g. reading instead of watching TV). Games consoles are surprisingly power-consuming, so keep those off when you can.
    4. Don't believe any Malthusian theory conspiracies about overpopulation. Don't get a vasectomy if you don't want to. Don't let anxiety about the climate stop you from raising more children if you wish. Just raise them to be environmentally aware.
    5. Remember that the climate crisis is not your fault. While your efforts at sustainable living may be both noble and ultimately beneficial for the world, it's a tiny dent in the climate crisis when compared to the environmental damage done by multinational corporate monopolies in the name of profit. The best thing you can do is advocate for environmental preservation, and vote for environmentalist politicians.
