Do we have too many mugs?

My wife keeps bringing home mugs from work. We have probably 50+ mugs. They take up two whole cabinets. She doesn't even use them. I keep telling her we have plenty but she doesn't listen.

How do I convience her we have too many mugs?

There is a point where the accumulation of any one thing surpasses usefulness. How often a family consumes hot beverages modified by how frequently the dishes are washed can give one an estimate of how many mugs are practical, with a few thrown in for guests.

If your wife genuinely adores mugs, it is time to de choose whether this will become a collection. For several decades, my mother collected bells, eventually theses were supplanted by figurines of angels.

Buy a large glass display case to house the collection, and encourage her to discard the mundane ones in order to build a more interesting collection. You’ll know exactly what to look for in the souvenir shop when traveling.

If a collection isn’t appealing, get out some boxes to store them in and ask your wife to pick out perhaps ten or a dozen to leave in the kitchen cupboard. If you have a dinner service for eight people (or ten, etc.), it is hard to justify needing more than a few beyond that number. Some of the unchosen ones can be repurposed as pencil cups, small flowerpots, storage for small objects, etc. Tape up the boxes and stick them in storage, where they’ll likely be forgotten in a fairly short time.
