How do you know when it's time to upgrade your phone?
I know my phone is outdated. There have been a dozen new releases in this android line since I bought mine, but it's still working. There are a few annoyances in its functionality, it's true, but do I need to upgrade? I don't want to discover one day that my phone has been bricked, but I also know I could never keep up with the cutting edge of technology. What are the signs that it's time to move on?

I have never "upgraded" (replaced) a smartphone that was still working. Always update the software every chance you get; same with the apps. Most updates are security-related, and your phone is already protected mainly by obscurity; if you ever become a specific target, it will be pwned. Cory Doctorow's book "Attack Surface" is not too much of an exaggeration.
On the other hand, every time one phone dies, I get a better one; and the difference is usually "noticeable".
On the third hand, how much processing power do you really need to carry arouind in your pocket? If you're doing serious computing, get a real computer!
