I do salutation to the sun with an app on my phone. It is 4 minutes. Twelve poses, 20 seconds each. I don't know if it is ideal, but it works for me.

  2. A sun salutation is a series of yoga poses. In different traditions, classes, and practices it is used in different ways. Ashtanga yoga for instance uses series of sun salutations to build heat. They tend to be more energetic, precise, and faster.  A vinyasa class might use them to warm up the body at the beginning of a class. These might be a bit slower, but still fluid. A hatha yoga practice is more about spending time in each pose. A practicioner of hatha yoga might spend much longer in these poses if they were to do the sun salutation series.

To answer your question more directly, it depends. At the end of the day, it should serve what you need in your body on that day. Maybe try playing with timing, holding poses, and other ques and see what feels good for you. As with most things yoga, the answers often lie within our own minds.
