How hard is it to learn to speak Basque?
I'm going to some rural parts in Spain and Western France for an Antropology study and I am wondering how hard would it be for me to pick up some Basque?

Basque is one of the hardest languages to learn, I'm sorry to say! My family comes from the San Seastian area, and various members have gone back to visit, without needing any Basque. You can definitely memorize some basic phrases but it would be a lot of work to get conversational, even if you already know Spanish - Basque is from entirely different roots.
