What can I do if my neighbor's garden is extending more and more over my property line each season?

I like to keep a very tidy lawn, but my neighbor's garden keeps growing over into my yard. It looks horrendous and I would very much like it to stop, but my neighbor keeps just making empty promises. I really don't want to just demolish the part of their garden encroching into my property, but I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

If the bylaws of your jurisdiction permit it, you can decide to either build a fence or plant a hedge along the property line. Inform your neighbour of your plans well in advance and do it when the garden is out of season. If you are in a part of the world where the growing season lasts pretty much year round, you may have to negotiate with your neighbour and plan a date when that part of the garden will be empty.

If you and your neighbour cannot agree on exactly where the property line is, it may be necessary to get in a surveyor. There will be a fee for this but in the end you will have a neat lawn and it is also hoped that you will have peace in the neighbourhood.
