Hi Sarah! As an absolute paper fanatic and bullet journal-er of several years, I found two notebooks that consistently provide a really nice writing experience. While I really love love love the simplicity of the bullet journal approach, for me the paper and notebook is most important.

The best hardcover planner/notebook I've used is from Leuchtturm1917. They have an official Bullet Journal notebook but I prefer their A5 Hardcover Notebook Classic in dotted grid. I find the dotted grid super flexible for creating different lines, shapes, and sections while being unobtrusive visually. The writing and paper quality is similar to Moleskine but the main benefits of Leuchtturm are the pocket in the back, paper numbering/fillable table of contents, and spine stickers to label when complete. I find there is less paper bleed, too, but not by a ton. Honestly and truly, this was the first notebook I ever filled up start to finish, and now I have 4 filled and shelved.

If you want a softcover notebook or just a truly sublime writing experience, the Japanese paper and stationary company Midori is hands down the best, softest, most incredible paper that is absolutely a joy to write on. Their softcover notebooks  still have a good spine that doesn't crack but lays flat and is still easily manipulable if you need to fold the cover to the back. Midori also has the best stationary accessories like stickers and clips and things.

For some bullet journaling context, I don't take it too seriously, either in terms of design but really appreciate the approach from a task-management and tracking perspective. It is so simple and uncluttered! I do enjoy the bullet journaling instagrams with intricate trackers, colorful doodled layouts, and use of washi tape but as much as I love how that looks, I simply do not have the time or energy each week to keep up with that. I've found/refined a very simple weekly layout that works for me. And with the right notebook, I'm encouraged to stick with it each week for task management.

    Happy writing/planning/notebook shopping!
