What is the purpose of political yard signs?
I can't imagine seeing a yard sign here and there is going to swing any votes. Is it a matter of personal pride or solidarity, then?

It stems from the psychology of Tribalism. Seeing "us" out in the world helps you to better solidify your bond to whatever candidate is being advertised.
There's a flip side to that, too, as seeing signs of opposing candidates can also invoke the feeling of "them" and "other" so that you'll trigger a response of competition and (especially in this election cycle) anger towards the opposition. This then solidifies a bond to your chosen candidate, too, so it works both ways!
